Main image

Aursunden is a freshwater lake in Trøndelag in central Norway, located in the highland area near the town of Røros. It is best known as the headwater lake for the river Glomma.

The lake is visited for fishing, canoeing and lakeshore outdoor recreation, and for its role as the start of a major river system. Shorelines and small inlets provide access for anglers and boaters.

The lake and surrounding wetlands have long been used by local communities for fishing and transport; its connection to the Glomma has made it regionally important for waterways and industry over time. Administrative boundaries around the lake have changed with municipal reorganizations.

Aursunden sits in eastern Trøndelag near the historic mining town of Røros, in a hilly, forested landscape of central Norway. The area is rural with a mix of lakes, rivers and boreal forest.

  • Source: Lake is the primary source of Norway's longest river, the Glomma.
  • Recreation: Good for freshwater fishing and small-boat recreation; access points are found on the lake's shores.
