Aulavik National Park
National Park Remote Arctic park on Banks Island, muskox habitat.
On Banks Island in Canada’s High Arctic, Aulavik National Park protects tundra, muskox herds and the Thomsen River; paddlers, wildlife researchers and serious backcountry travelers visit for remote Arctic rivers and birdlife.
Aulavik National Park occupies a large portion of northern Banks Island in the Northwest Territories of Canada and protects high Arctic tundra, wildlife and cultural sites. The park was established to conserve remote northern ecosystems and substantial muskox populations.
The park is centred on the Thomsen River corridor, which is noted as one of the most northerly navigable rivers in North America and is used for small-boat travel and wildlife observation. Visitors come for wildlife, arctic landscapes and remote wilderness experiences rather than developed amenities.
Aulavik was designated a national park to protect the island’s unique High Arctic ecology and historical features including prehistoric and historic sites. Its remoteness and fragile environment mean that visitor numbers are low and travel is tightly managed.
The park lies on northern Banks Island within Canada’s Arctic Archipelago, north of the Arctic Circle, in the Northwest Territories; the nearest communities are remote and access is by air or sea.
- Access: Extremely remote access by charter flight or private vessel; there are no developed visitor facilities and travel requires wilderness experience or a guided operator.
What to See #
- Thomsen River: A short, meandering river noted for being one of the most northerly navigable waterways in North America and a popular route for small-boat trips and wildlife viewing within the park.
How to Get to Aulavik National Park #
Aulavik National Park on northern Banks Island is extremely remote with no road access. The usual access is by chartered bush aircraft from Inuvik (the regional air gateway) or other Arctic communities; charters and logistics must be arranged in advance with operators and park authorities. There are no scheduled road or ferry links - expect fly‑in access and tundra travel once on the island.
Tips for Visiting Aulavik National Park #
- Access is fly-in only: arrange a charter to Sachs Harbour (Banks Island) as your staging point and coordinate transport into the park well in advance.
- Visit in mid-summer (July-August) when the Thomsen River is navigable and the ice-free season allows river trips and wildlife viewing.
- Register with Parks Canada, travel with experienced Arctic guides for river expeditions, and plan logistics (fuel, food caches, spare parts) because Aulavik has no visitor services or roads.
Best Time to Visit Aulavik National Park #
The short summer (July-August) is the only practical time for most visits-expect cold, remote-arctic conditions and limited logistics.
