Aukštaitija National Park

Aukštaitija National Park is a protected area in northeastern Lithuania, established to conserve a landscape of lakes, forests and traditional villages characteristic of the Aukštaitija region. It is one of Lithuania’s leading national parks for nature-based recreation and cultural heritage.

The park features numerous lakes connected by waterways, forested uplands and marked trails for hiking and paddling. Visitors come for canoeing, birdwatching, forest walks and to visit historic wooden churches and ethnographic villages that illustrate traditional rural life.

The park was founded in the 1970s to safeguard the region’s natural and cultural values and has since been managed for both conservation and public recreation, with ranger services and visitor facilities in key locations.

It lies in Utena County in northeastern Lithuania, roughly 100 kilometres northeast of Vilnius, surrounded by a mixed landscape of lakes, wetlands and forest.
