Augarten
Park Historic Baroque park with porcelain factory and gardens
A short tram ride from Vienna’s centre, Augarten contains an 18th‑century palace, formal green spaces and the Augarten porcelain manufactory; visitors stroll lawns and attend occasional concerts.
Augarten is a historic public park and garden in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna, notable for its Baroque layout and cultural institutions. The site also contains a palace, a porcelain manufactory, and prominent wartime structures.
The park is known for its formal avenues, garden compartments and open lawns. On-site highlights include the historic porcelain workshop where Vienna-style porcelain is produced and displayed, and two massive World War II-era flak towers that are among the park’s most conspicuous landmarks. The palace and the porcelain works are clustered near the park’s central axis and are the main built attractions.
The park area grew up around a Baroque palace and gardens; the porcelain manufactory associated with the site originates in the early 18th century. The flak towers were constructed during the Second World War and remain as large concrete structures within the park. Over time the grounds have been adapted for public recreation while retaining key historical buildings.
Augarten sits in Vienna’s 2nd district (Leopoldstadt), north of the Danube Canal and a short distance northeast of the historical city centre. The park is easily accessible from central Vienna by public transport and by foot from nearby neighbourhoods.
- Park character: The park combines formal Baroque landscaping with 20th-century elements and public recreational space, making it one of Vienna's principal green areas north of the Danube Canal.
- Viewing tip: Best light for photography is early morning or late afternoon when the low sun highlights the façades and the trees along the main promenades.
What to See #
- Palais Augarten: Located within the park, a Baroque palace that gives the site its name and houses formal gardens and protected parkland.
- Augarten Porcelain Manufactory: A historic porcelain manufactory still associated with Vienna porcelain; the original Vienna porcelain enterprise dates to the early 18th century and the workshop at Augarten is a major surviving centre for production and display.
- Flak towers: Two large World War II anti-aircraft concrete towers that dominate the park skyline and are visible from a wide area of Leopoldstadt.
