Attavyros
Mountain Highest Rhodes mountain with ancient temple ruins
Mount Attavyros on Rhodes is the island’s highest peak with steep hiking trails, summit ruins of an ancient sanctuary and sweeping views over western Rhodes and the Aegean.
Attavyros is the highest mountain on the island of Rhodes in the South Aegean, rising to roughly 1,215 metres and forming a prominent inland landmark.
The summit ridge offers wide views over Rhodes and the surrounding sea; hikers commonly reach the top for those vistas and to visit the nearby archaeological remains. Short village roads and footpaths link the slopes to local villages and vineyards.
The summit area contains the ruins of an ancient hilltop sanctuary traditionally dedicated to Zeus, and the mountain has long been used for grazing and local agriculture. Over time access has become easier with marked footpaths from nearby settlements.
Located in the central-southern part of Rhodes island, the mountain sits inland from the west coast and is a short drive from the village of Embonas and other central Rhodes settlements.
- Best viewing times: Steep rocky ridges give panoramic views across Rhodes and the Aegean on clear days, making sunrise and late-afternoon visits particularly rewarding.
- Trail conditions: Trails are unpaved and can be steep; sturdy footwear and water are recommended for the ascent.

- Embonas village: A mountain village on the southern slopes that serves as a common starting point for walks and local wine tourism.
Tips for Visiting Attavyros #
- Head up early morning or late afternoon to avoid Rhodes' midday heat and for the best panoramic light across the Aegean and nearby islands.
- Most ascents start from the village of Embonas-park or base yourself there and follow the marked paths that lead toward the summit and the small chapel/monastery near the top.
- Check local weather before you go: Attavyros is exposed and can be very windy or foggy outside the summer months, so pick a clear day for the best views.
