Atomium
Church Futuristic steel-and-aluminum structure representing iron crystal magnified
The Atomium, built for Expo ‘58, links nine stainless‑steel spheres to resemble an iron crystal; visitors ride escalators between spheres for exhibitions and panoramic city views.
The Atomium is a landmark structure in Brussels originally built for the 1958 World Exposition. It is a stylized model of an iron crystal unit cell composed of nine stainless steel spheres connected by tubes and stands 102 metres tall.
Visitors ride lifts and walk through tubular links to explore exhibition spaces inside several spheres and to reach the top sphere for panoramic views over the city. The building combines exhibition galleries, temporary displays and a restaurant-level viewpoint.
Designed as a symbol of scientific progress and modern architecture for Expo 58, the Atomium has become a durable icon of Brussels and has been refurbished to provide modern visitor facilities while retaining its original concept.
The Atomium is located in the Laeken district, north of central Brussels, close to other Expo and parkland sites.
- Height and symbolism: Constructed for the 1958 Brussels World Expo, the structure stands 102 metres tall and represents an iron crystal unit cell magnified many billions of times.
- Visitor access: The interior contains exhibitions and a viewing platform; access involves lifts and connecting walkways between spheres.
What to See #
- Spheres: Nine interconnected stainless steel-clad spheres contain exhibition spaces, stairs and elevators and are linked by glazed tubes for visitor circulation.
- Panoramic sphere: The top sphere houses a panoramic viewing gallery with city views and a restaurant-level vantage point above Brussels.
How to Get to Atomium #
Take Brussels Metro line 6 to Heysel/Heizel station (the station serving the Brussels Expo/Heysel area). From Heysel station it is a 10-15 minute walk across the expo/park area to the Atomium.
By car the Atomium is northwest of central Brussels and is reached via the A12/Brussels Ring (R0) with on-site parking available around the Heysel/Expo complex.
Tips for Visiting Atomium #
- Buy a timed-entry ticket in advance and aim for either the first morning slot or late afternoon to avoid peak coach arrivals at Heysel/Heizel.
- Use the Heysel/Heizel metro station (line 6) to reach Atomium directly; it's a short walk across the expo grounds and saves parking hassles.
- Combine your visit with Mini-Europe next door and leave time to ride the elevator to the top sphere for the panoramic view - temporary exhibitions inside the spheres are often missed by quick visitors.
Best Time to Visit Atomium #
Visit in late spring or early autumn on weekdays for better light and fewer visitors at the exhibits and viewpoint.
