Atik Valide Mosque

Atik Valide Mosque is a 16th-century Ottoman mosque complex in the Üsküdar district on Istanbul’s Asian shore, commissioned by Nurbanu Sultan and attributed to the architect Mimar Sinan. It formed part of a larger külliye providing religious, educational and charitable functions.

The complex’s principal features are the domed prayer hall and the open courtyard, accompanied by ancillary structures such as a madrasa and former charitable institutions. Architectural details and period tilework are principal points of interest for visitors.

Constructed in the classical Ottoman era, the complex has been conserved and remains an active place of worship while also attracting architectural interest. It occupies a hill site in Üsküdar with views across parts of the Bosphorus and the city.

The mosque stands in the Üsküdar district on Istanbul’s Anatolian side, within a densely built residential area and a short distance from the waterfront.
