Main image

Athabasca Falls is a powerful waterfall on the Athabasca River within Jasper National Park in Alberta, known for its forceful flow and narrow, rocky canyon. It is a compact but dramatic natural attraction along the Icefields Parkway.

The site features a network of stairs, boardwalks and platforms that bring visitors close to the rushing falls and the chiseled quartzite canyon walls formed by river erosion. It is a short, accessible stop for drivers travelling the Icefields Parkway.

Formed by long-term glacial and river erosion cutting through hard bedrock, the falls and canyon reflect geological processes common to the region, with visible sculpting of rock and frequent changes in water flow with seasonal melt.

Sited on the Icefields Parkway roughly 30 kilometres south of the town of Jasper, the falls are immediately adjacent to the highway and have a small parking area and short walking circuits.

  • Access and proximity: Located about 30 kilometres south of the town of Jasper along the Icefields Parkway, reachable by roadside parking and short walks from viewing platforms.
  • Visitor facilities and safety: Short boardwalks and viewing platforms provide safe vantage points over the falls and the sculpted canyon; winter conditions can make trails icy.

How to Get to Athabasca Falls #

Athabasca Falls is located on the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) inside Jasper National Park. From the town of Jasper drive south on Highway 93 for roughly 25-30 km (about 20-30 minutes) to the falls; there is a signed turnoff and a parking area.

From the parking area it’s a short paved walk of a few minutes to viewing platforms and trails that overlook the falls.

Tips for Visiting Athabasca Falls #

  • Visit at or shortly after opening to avoid the tour‑bus rush and to capture dramatic light on the falls; mid‑day is when coach parties tend to arrive.
  • Use the main Icefields Parkway parking and follow the signed short trail to the main viewing platforms rather than trying to park along the highway; the established platforms give the best safe vantage points.
  • Walk both the upper and lower viewing areas and continue a short distance upstream for quieter overlooks - the upstream viewpoints often show the canyon's scale and are less crowded than the main platform.
