Ateshgah of Baku
Building Historic fire temple shrine reflecting Zoroastrian and Hindu influences
Fire temple in Surakhani historically used by Zoroastrians and visiting Hindu pilgrims, preserved as an enclosed complex. Visitors see the fire altars and interpretive exhibits.
The Ateshgah of Baku is a pentagonal fire-temple complex on the outskirts of Baku in the Surakhani settlement, notable for its central altar and inscriptions. The present stone compound dates mainly to the 17th and 18th centuries and is set around a courtyard with cells and a raised altar.
The courtyard originally centred on a continuously burning flame produced by natural gas seeps and was used by fire-worshipping communities including Hindus, Sikhs and Zoroastrians. Today the site functions as a museum with explanatory displays about its use and inscriptions in several languages.
The surviving structure and inscriptions reflect the role of merchant communities and religious pilgrims in the 17th and 18th centuries; the natural flames were affected by drilling and gas extraction in the 20th century and the site was conserved and adapted as a museum thereafter.
The temple stands in the Surakhani area on the Absheron Peninsula, on the eastern outskirts of Baku and is accessible by road from the city centre.
- Museum site: The complex is presented as a museum and interpretation signage explains Hindu and Zoroastrian connections as well as later restoration work.
