Atacama Desert
Desert World's driest nonpolar desert with salt flats
One of Earth’s driest non-polar deserts, the Atacama features salt flats, geysers and wind-sculpted valleys around San Pedro de Atacama; tourists come for stargazing, high-altitude lagoons, geothermal fields and guided desert treks.
The Atacama Desert is a high, arid region in northern Chile known for extreme dryness, salt flats, colorful rock formations and high-elevation geyser fields. It contains distinctive features such as the Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna), salt flats and geothermal areas used as visitor attractions.
Visitors explore sculpted badlands, salar basins and geyser fields, often based from towns such as San Pedro de Atacama; activities include short hikes, visiting salt lagoons that host flamingos, and early-morning trips to thermal fields such as El Tatio. Nighttime observatory visits and stargazing are major attractions because of minimal light pollution and clear skies.
The desert’s landscapes are the product of long-term aridity, tectonic uplift and saline depositional processes; archaeological remains and pre-Columbian settlements are present in some oasis areas.
Geographically the Atacama stretches along Chile’s northern regions, including the Antofagasta Region, and occupies plateaus and valleys of the Altiplano and coastal range.
- Climate extremes: The Atacama is one of the driest nonpolar deserts on Earth; daytime heat and strong sun contrast with cold nights and large temperature swings.
- Stargazing: Clear, dry air and high altitude create exceptional conditions for astronomical observatories and stargazing; many observatory tours depart from local towns at night.
What to See #
- Valle de la Luna: Valle de la Luna near San Pedro de Atacama features sculpted rock and salt formations in a desert basin popular for sunset visits and short walks.
- El Tatio Geysers: El Tatio is a high-altitude geyser field on the Andes plateau where visitors go early in the morning to see steam vents and thermal activity; the site sits at over 4,000 metres elevation.
- Salar de Atacama: Salar de Atacama is a large salt flat that hosts flamingo populations and salt-extraction areas, accessed from San Pedro de Atacama and surrounding roads.
How to Get to Atacama Desert #
The Atacama Desert covers a very large area; for northern Atacama highlights most visitors fly into Calama (El Loa Airport) and then drive about 100 km on Route 23 to the town of San Pedro de Atacama, where most tours and 4x4 excursions depart. For coastal/desert areas in Antofagasta Region you can drive directly from the city of Antofagasta along the Pan‑American Highway (Ruta 5) to access nearby desert sites.
Tips for Visiting Atacama Desert #
- For Valle de la Luna, go at sunrise rather than sunset to avoid the big sunset crowds and to get cooler, clearer light for photography and hiking among the salt-and-rock formations.
- Book astronomy or observatory tours in advance for stargazing on clear nights-small-group shows at dedicated observatories give far better sky views than ad-hoc setups outside town.
- If you want quieter natural sites, schedule early-morning departures for high-altitude lagoons (e.g., Miscanti & Miñiques) when buses haven't yet arrived and birds are most active.
Best Time to Visit Atacama Desert #
The Atacama is visitable year‑round; aim for shoulder months (Apr-May or Sep-Oct) for milder daytime temperatures and outstanding stargazing.
