Astuvansalmi rock paintings

Astuvansalmi rock paintings are a prehistoric open-air rock-art site in South Savo, Finland, located on a granite cliff at the shore of the Saimaa lake system near the village of Ristiina. The panels are attributed to the Bronze Age and are among Finland’s best-known rock-painting localities.

The painted motifs appear in red pigment on a vertical rock face and include schematic human figures, boats and animals, concentrated within a short stretch of cliff. The panels are compact rather than spread across a wide area, so viewing typically focuses on a few main painted sections.

Scholars interpret the images as related to maritime and hunting lifeways of prehistoric communities; the paintings represent ritual or symbolic imagery rather than decorative art. The site has been recorded and studied by Finnish archaeologists since the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The rock face sits at the waterline of the Saimaa basin in eastern Finland, within the municipality historically known as Ristiina in South Savo. The nearest regional centre is Mikkeli.

• Access: Located on a rocky lakeshore and best approached on foot; the paintings are exposed on a near-vertical granite face rather than on a cave ceiling.
