The Asterousia Mountains are a low to mid-elevation range along southern Crete, Greece, forming a natural barrier between the central-southern plains and the Libyan Sea. The chain is characterised by rugged, largely treeless slopes and karstic geology.
Travelers explore the range for remote coastal views, traditional mountain villages and walking routes that overlook the Mesara Plain and the southern coastline. The terrain is dry and panoramic rather than alpine, and many routes are day hikes or drives linking small settlements.
The mountains have supported pastoralism and small-scale agriculture for centuries; archaeological remains and small chapels dot the slopes, reflecting long-standing human use of the marginal landscape.
Running east-west across southern Crete, the Asterousia range lies south of the fertile Mesara Plain and faces the Libyan Sea along Crete’s southern coast.
