Assur
Archaeological Site Ancient Assyrian capital ruins on the Tigris River
Ancient Assur (Ashur) sits on the Tigris and functioned as an Assyrian capital; the archaeological site contains temple foundations, palace remains and city-wall fragments that document imperial administration and religion.
Assur (Ashur) is an ancient city on the Tigris River in present-day Saladin Governorate that served as the religious and political centre of the early Assyrian state. It is a key archaeological site for understanding Assyrian history from the third millennium BCE onward.
Excavated remains include a central ziggurat and temple precincts, administrative and palace complexes, and a clearly visible city layout across successive occupation layers. The site yields inscriptions, relief fragments and architectural remains that document Assyrian cult, governance and urban planning.
Because of its long occupation sequence, Assur illustrates shifts in political and religious practice across early and imperial Assyrian periods and remains a focus of archaeological research and heritage protection.
Founded in the third millennium BCE and named for the city’s patron god Ashur, Assur served as a core urban and cultic centre for early Assyrian polities and continued to be important under later Assyrian kings. Its fortunes rose and fell with regional political changes over millennia.
The archaeological site stands on the Tigris River in Saladin Governorate, north of Baghdad and within the historic Assyrian heartland approximately between the modern cities of Mosul and Tikrit.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the site preserves a long sequence of Assyrian urban development from early city-state phases through to imperial Assyria.
