Aspromonte National Park is a protected area in the southern tip of mainland Italy, in the Aspromonte massif of Calabria. The park encompasses a range of mountainous terrain, gorges and Mediterranean vegetation and contains the massif’s highest summit, Montalto.
Hikers and nature visitors come for mountain trails, panoramic viewpoints and the variety of plant communities that change with altitude. The park contains deep ravines, rocky summits and traditional villages on the slopes, offering routes of varying difficulty.
The area has long been used for pastoralism, agriculture and small settlements; the park was designated to protect the massif’s natural and cultural features in the late 20th century and since then has been managed for conservation and low-intensity tourism.
The park lies within Calabria in southern Italy, occupying the Aspromonte massif above the Tyrrhenian coast and overlooking the Strait of Messina to the south and southeast.
