Aspero
Archaeological Site Preceramic coastal archaeological site of the Norte Chico
Aspero on Peru’s central coast preserves preceramic coastal mounds and fishing-related remains in the Supe Valley; archaeologists and cultural tourists visit to study early Andean maritime societies.
Aspero is an archaeological coastal settlement in the Supe Valley on the central Peruvian coast, associated with some of the earliest complex societies in the Americas. The site functioned as a maritime fishing settlement and was part of the broader Caral-Supe cultural network in the third and second millennia BCE.
Excavated areas have revealed platform mounds, shell middens and early construction phases that document sustained shoreline occupation and resource use. The combination of coastal production and inland ceremonial centers is a key feature of the regional preceramic-to-early ceramic sequence.
Aspero developed during the Late Archaic and Initial Formative periods and was contemporaneous with early monumental sites in the Supe Valley; it played a role in supplying marine resources to regional population centers.
The site lies near the mouth of the Supe River on the central coast of Peru in the Department of Lima, within the Supe Valley archaeological landscape.
- Antiquity and cultural context: The site dates to the Late Archaic and Early Formative periods of the central Peruvian coast, roughly the third to second millennium BCE, and is part of the Caral-Supe cultural landscape.
- Site features: Archaeological remains include shell middens, platform mounds and early architectural constructions that indicate a coastal fishing and ceremonial settlement.
