Asclepeion of Kos

The Asclepeion of Kos is an ancient healing sanctuary on Kos island dedicated to the god Asclepius, closely associated with the island’s medical traditions. The sanctuary contains remains from Hellenistic foundations and substantial Roman-period rebuilding.

Remains include temple foundations, stoas, courtyard areas and service buildings that formed a clinical and ritual complex for healing and therapy. The site is often linked in antiquity to the broader medical school traditions of Kos, including associations with Hippocratic practice.

The complex was established in the Hellenistic era and modified during the Roman period as the sanctuary continued to function as both a religious and therapeutic center. Excavations have revealed architectural phases spanning those periods.

The Asclepeion sits on a gentle hillside south of Kos town on the island of Kos, with terraces oriented toward coastal views.
