Arycanda
Archaeological Site Ancient Lycian city ruins with well-preserved theatre
Arycanda’s ruins on a pine-covered Lycian slope in Antalya Province include a stepped theatre, colonnaded streets and carved tombs; archaeologists and hikers visit for well-preserved classical architecture and mountain views.
Arycanda is an ancient Lycian city in Antalya Province, Turkey, with visible remains from Hellenistic and Roman periods. The site is notable for its arrangement of public buildings and burial monuments on a steep, terraced hillside.
Surviving features include a theatre, public agora, colonnaded streets, baths, and an extensive necropolis with rock-cut tombs. The urban remains sit across multiple carved terraces and retain substantial stone architecture typical of Lycian urban centers.
The city was established in the Hellenistic era and saw major development during the Roman period, when many of the public buildings and infrastructure were constructed or rebuilt. It declined during the later Roman and Byzantine periods and was abandoned in the medieval era.
Arycanda sits inland in the Taurus mountain zone of southwestern Turkey, above the coastal plain of Lycia in Antalya Province. The ruins are reached by a mountain road and are set high above the surrounding valleys.
- Steep terraced location: The site is set on a steep, terraced mountainside, so visiting involves uphill walks between the main ruins and the necropolis.
What to See #
- Theatre: A semicircular theatre built into the slope, retaining seating rows and a stage area from the Roman period that served civic and entertainment functions.
- Agora and colonnaded streets: A central agora and colonnaded streets with the remains of stoas and public buildings reflecting the city plan from Hellenistic and Roman phases.
- Baths: Public bath complex and associated service rooms showing Roman-era infrastructure for bathing and social use.
- Necropolis: Rock-cut and freestanding tombs on the surrounding slopes forming an extensive necropolis typical of Lycian burial practices.
How to Get to Arycanda #
Arycanda is accessed by rural roads from the Antalya region. The nearest coastal towns (Kaş and Finike) are the most common bases; from them hire a car or local driver for the roughly one- to two-hour mountain approach and a short walk to the site. Roads can be narrow and winding - allow extra time.
Tips for Visiting Arycanda #
- Bring sun protection - the ruins sit exposed on limestone slopes with little shade.
- Study the theatre's tiered seating before arriving: the climb up rewards with that perfect frame of the valley through the stage's proscenium.
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the strongest sun and to catch softer light for photographs.
Best Time to Visit Arycanda #
Visit in spring or autumn for comfortable weather and the best light on the theatre and colonnaded streets.
