Artaxata (also Artashat) is an archaeological site in Ararat Province, Armenia, established as an ancient city and former capital of the kingdom of Armenia. It dates to the Hellenistic period and served as a major administrative and ceremonial centre.
The site comprises extensive ruins and visible masonry remains from Hellenistic and later periods; it is visited for its archaeological importance rather than large above-ground monuments. Interpretive trails and scattered remains show the layout of streets, defensive works and building platforms.
Artaxata was founded by King Artaxias I in the Hellenistic era and became a principal Armenian capital; it features in historical accounts as a royal residence and administrative centre over successive centuries. The site went through phases of construction, decline and reuse across antiquity and the early medieval period.
Located in Ararat Province near the modern town of Artashat, the ruins lie on the Aras/Araks river plain in central Armenia, within reach of Yerevan to the northwest.
