Arolsen Castle

Arolsen Castle is an 18th century Baroque palace complex in the centre of Bad Arolsen in Hesse, Germany, built as the residence of the Waldeck princely family between about 1713 and 1728. It forms the architectural centrepiece of the town and remains a large, well-preserved example of German Baroque princely architecture.

The complex is noted for its symmetrical palace block, formal inner courtyard, and adjacent park which together create a planned urban and landscape ensemble. Visitors typically view the courtyard and park and can join guided visits to interior rooms and periodic exhibitions on regional history.

The palace was constructed as the dynastic seat of the Waldeck counts and princes and served as their principal residence through the 18th and 19th centuries. Over time the building and grounds have been adapted for public functions and museum use while retaining the Baroque layout.

The castle sits in the historic centre of Bad Arolsen in northern Hesse, making it easily walkable from the town centre and visible from several approach roads through the town.
