Arkansas Post
Park Historic colonial trading post and national historic site
At the confluence of the Arkansas and White rivers, Arkansas Post interprets a colonial trading post and 19th-century military site with a museum, trails and exhibits on frontier and Civil War history.
Arkansas Post is a historic site and national memorial near the Arkansas River in eastern Arkansas that marks one of the earliest European settlements in the lower Mississippi Valley. The location preserves archaeological remains and interpreted landscapes tied to colonial trade, forts and early American frontier history.
The memorial includes a visitor center with interpretive exhibits, walking trails across the riverine lowlands and visible remains or reconstructions of defensive works associated with successive colonial forts. Outdoor interpretive signage explains the site’s sequence of French, Spanish and American activity and its role in regional trade and military events. Trails lead through low-lying floodplain terrain with viewpoints over the river and historic markers.
A European trading post was established at the location in the late 17th century and it later developed as a fortified post under French and Spanish control; the site featured in colonial and early American conflicts and government activity in the region. Archaeological work and conservation have identified foundations, fort traces and artifact assemblages that document these phases.
The site lies in the Arkansas delta region near the community of Arkansas Post, within a riverine, lowland landscape along the Arkansas River; it is south-southeast of Little Rock and accessed by regional roads from nearby towns.
- Historical importance: Founded as a European trading post in the late 17th century, the site later hosted successive colonial forts and was central to regional colonial and frontier history.
- Landscape and access: The park is low-lying river delta landscape; winter and spring floods can affect access and some trails may be seasonally closed.
