Arkaim

Arkaim is a Bronze Age fortified settlement in Chelyabinsk Oblast in the southern Ural steppe, notable for its concentric circular plan and archaeological importance. It dates to the later Bronze Age and is often associated with the Sintashta cultural complex.

On site visitors can see the remains of concentric walls, radial street layouts and the footprints of houses, with partial reconstructions and walkways that make the settlement plan clear. The site includes a small visitor complex that interprets the archaeology and regional Bronze Age culture for the public.

Arkaim was located and excavated in the late 20th century and has been the subject of archaeological study and conservation since its discovery in 1987. The site has been reconstructed in places to show how timber and earthen architecture may have appeared.

The site sits in the steppe of Chelyabinsk Oblast in the southern Urals, in open grassland away from large urban centres; access is by road from regional towns and the site functions as an archaeological reserve.
