Outside Puducherry, Arikamedu preserves an ancient trading site with Roman-era pottery, beads and amphora fragments; archaeologists and history-minded visitors come to inspect excavated foundations and coastal ruins.
Arikamedu is an archaeological site on the Coromandel Coast near modern Puducherry (Pondicherry) in southeastern India, known as an ancient port and trading centre. It was a focal point for Indo-Roman trade during the early centuries of the Common Era.
Excavations have uncovered imported Roman amphorae, fine ceramics and beads that document maritime commerce between South India and the Mediterranean from around the 1st century BCE into the early centuries CE. Visible remains include foundations, rampart lines and excavation trenches with interpreted storage and craft areas.
Archaeological investigation began in the 20th century and has included work by international and Indian archaeologists; many recovered objects are displayed in local museums. The site is valued for its material evidence of ancient global trade networks.
Arikamedu sits on the coast at Ariyankuppam, about 4 km south of central Puducherry, with road access from the city and local visitor information available in nearby museums.
