Areni-1 is a cave site near the village of Areni in Vayots Dzor Province, Armenia, noted for exceptionally well-preserved Chalcolithic and Bronze Age archaeological remains. Intensive excavations since the 2000s have produced finds of wide scientific interest.
The site is primarily of archaeological and research interest; highlighted discoveries include a wine-production facility with vats and press equipment dated to about 4100 BCE, and well-preserved organic artifacts recovered from dry cave contexts. Public visitation is limited and the site is typically accessed by researchers or as part of guided archaeological tours in the region.
Systematic excavation began in the 2000s under international teams; major reported finds were announced after fieldwork from 2007 onward. The assemblage has contributed key evidence about early viniculture, material culture and mortuary practice in the South Caucasus.
The cave sits on the slopes above the Arpa River valley near the village of Areni in southern Armenia, within Vayots Dzor Province.

- Organic artifacts: The site also produced a well-preserved leather shoe and other organic artifacts recovered in dry cave environments, dating to the Chalcolithic period.
How to Get to Areni-1 cave #
Areni is about 100-120 km southeast of Yerevan. The drive from Yerevan via the M2 and regional roads takes approximately 2-3 hours; minibuses and private car hires operate from Yerevan to Areni. Visits to Areni-1 are best arranged with local guides or the excavating team for access and information.
