Architectural Ensemble of the Trinity Sergius Lavra in Sergiev Posad

The Architectural Ensemble of the Trinity Sergius Lavra in Sergiev Posad is a major Russian Orthodox monastic and ecclesiastical complex founded in the 14th century in Moscow Oblast, Russia. It is one of the most important spiritual centres of the Russian Church.

The complex is dominated by the Trinity Cathedral, founded in the 14th and early 15th centuries, which houses relics associated with the monastery’s founder. Surrounding structures include multiple churches, cloisters, defensive walls and a prominent bell tower dating from later expansions.

Established by the monk Sergius of Radonezh in 1337, the Lavra developed over the medieval and early modern periods into a fortified monastic centre that played a significant religious and political role in Russian history. The site was expanded and embellished through the 16th to 18th centuries and has undergone restorations in later periods.

The Lavra stands in the town of Sergiev Posad in Moscow Oblast, approximately 70 kilometres north-east of central Moscow, set within a townscape that developed around the monastery.
