Archipiélago de Juan Fernández National Park is a Chilean national park protecting the Juan Fernández Islands group in the South Pacific, including the main islands historically known as Robinson Crusoe and Alejandro Selkirk.

The park encompasses terrestrial and marine areas and is noted for high levels of endemism among plants, birds and invertebrates; the group includes the inhabited Robinson Crusoe Island, the more remote Alejandro Selkirk Island, and smaller islets such as Santa Clara.

Archaeology and human history on the islands include long use by sailors and later settlements; the archipelago is also famously associated with the marooned sailor Alexander Selkirk, whose story inspired Robinson Crusoe.

Geographically the islands lie several hundred kilometres west of mainland Chile in the Pacific Ocean, roughly in line with the Valparaíso region of central Chile and are reached by limited air and sea services.

  • Access: Access to the islands is limited, with infrequent flights and supply ships connecting them to the Chilean mainland.
  • Biodiversity: The archipelago is important for endemic plants and animals and is protected for its high level of endemism and intact marine environments.

What to See #

  • Robinson Crusoe Island (Más a Tierra): The inhabited island where the main settlement San Juan Bautista is located and where most visitor services and trails are concentrated.
  • Alejandro Selkirk Island (Más Afuera): A more remote, rugged island to the southwest with steep terrain and fewer visitors, noted for its endemic flora and seabird colonies.
  • Santa Clara and satellite islets: A small islet lying between the two main islands that contributes to the archipelago's marine habitats and seabird nesting sites.
