Archaeological Zone of Paquimé, Casas Grandes

The Archaeological Zone of Paquimé, Casas Grandes, in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, is a pre-Columbian adobe urban complex notable for its multi-storey constructions and distinctive cultural features. The site represents the regional Casas Grandes cultural tradition of the late first millennium and early second millennium CE.

The monumental core contains multi-storey adobe compounds arranged around plazas, with T-shaped doorways and ceremonial spaces. Excavated rooms, storage areas and pottery assemblages document craft production and long-distance exchange.

Paquimé developed between about 1200 and 1450 CE as a regional centre in the Casas Grandes cultural sphere, showing complex social organisation, craft specialisation and trade connections across northern Mexico and the American Southwest. Its urban fabric and building techniques reflect sustained occupation and civic planning.

The zone is located in the Casas Grandes valley of northern Chihuahua state, near the modern town of Casas Grandes in north-western Mexico, situated within a semi-arid inland landscape.
