Archaeological Sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn
Archaeological Site Bronze Age archaeological complex and UNESCO World Heritage
A UNESCO World Heritage ensemble in Oman, the archaeological sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn preserve Bronze Age tombs, stone circles and falaj irrigation remains. Researchers and visitors study pre-Islamic settlement patterns in the desert.
The Archaeological Sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn are a group of Bronze Age settlements and necropolises in interior Oman, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They date principally to the 3rd millennium BCE and represent a regional cultural complex.
The ensemble includes circular stone tombs, large burial towers and settlement remains showing early organized communities and funerary practice. Stone constructions and monumental tombs are among the well-preserved features visible on the sites.
Archaeological study has established these sites as important examples of Bronze Age settlement and mortuary architecture in southeastern Arabia. Conservation and survey have emphasised their value for understanding early social organisation in the region.
The three sites lie in Al Dhahirah Governorate in Oman’s interior, set within a largely desert and wadi landscape.

Tips for Visiting Archaeological Sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn #
- Allow time to drive between the dispersed sites of Bat, Al‑Khutm and Al‑Ayn-this UNESCO ensemble is spread across the plain, so plan a route and don't expect a single consolidated complex.
- Stop at the small visitor facility at Bat and consider hiring a local guide there; the on-site explanations make the beehive tombs and falaj remains far more intelligible than viewing them from the road.
- Many visitors view only the largest tombs near the roadside-walk a little farther at each cluster to see less-disturbed funerary structures and surrounding landscape features that reveal the full settlement pattern.
