The Archaeological Crypt of Notre-Dame is an underground museum on Île de la Cité in Paris preserving archaeological remains of the city beneath and around the cathedral. It presents foundations and artefacts that document Paris from its Roman origins through the Middle Ages.
An underground circuit takes visitors past building foundations, street layouts and masonry from Gallo-Roman and medieval periods, with explanatory panels and finds displayed in situ. The visible remains illustrate urban development over roughly two millennia and are presented along a covered pathway.
The crypt was created after large-scale excavations in the second half of the 20th century that exposed successive layers of Parisian occupation; the site was arranged as a public archaeological display to protect and interpret the discoveries. Finds from the excavations have been conserved and incorporated into the permanent displays.
Situated beneath the square to the west of Notre-Dame cathedral on Île de la Cité, the crypt is accessed from street level near the cathedral precinct in central Paris.
