Main image

The Arch of Triumph in Pyongyang is a large commemorative arch erected to honor Korean resistance to Japanese occupation and the country’s leaders. It was constructed in the early 1980s and deliberately echoes European triumphal-arch architecture.

Its central arch and flanking structures are built from dressed stone and include inscriptions and reliefs related to national resistance history. The arch is set on a broad ceremonial avenue and serves as a civic landmark.

The monument was built as part of broader urban developments and public-memorial projects in Pyongyang during the late 20th century. It remains one of the more prominent pieces of monumental architecture in the city.

Sited on a major avenue in Pyongyang, the arch is near other central civic buildings and is visible from surrounding promenades and city squares.

  • Height and design: Constructed in 1982 and modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, it is slightly taller than the Parisian original at about 60 metres high.
