Arch of Cabo San Lucas
Area Natural rock arch at Land's End, Cabo San Lucas
Known locally as El Arco, the rock formation at Cabo San Lucas marks Land’s End where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific. Tourists take boat trips for photos, short snorkel stops and sea-lion sightings.
The Arch of Cabo San Lucas, commonly called El Arco, is a natural granite rock formation at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. It is a distinctive coastal landmark and a frequent subject of photography.
The formation stands at the end of a small rocky headland and is reached most often by short boat trips from the nearby marina; a sea lion colony inhabits the rocks adjacent to the arch. Visitors typically view the arch from boats, glass-bottom boats and from nearby beaches at Land’s End.
The arch is a product of centuries of wave and wind erosion on local granite and has no formal built history beyond its role as a navigational and visual landmark. It lies within the coastal waters off Cabo San Lucas at the tip of Baja California Sur.
- Access and activities: Boat tours from the Cabo San Lucas marina and nearby beaches are the standard way to reach the arch and its sea lion colony; swimming and snorkeling are popular around the nearby coves.
How to Get to Arch of Cabo San Lucas #
The Arch of Cabo San Lucas (El Arco) at Land’s End is reached from downtown Cabo San Lucas: drive on Mexico Federal Highway 1 (the Transpeninsular Highway) into Cabo and follow signs to the Cabo San Lucas Marina. From the marina, water taxis and small tour boats run regularly to the Arch - the boat ride is short (typically about 10-15 minutes) and the docks are a 5-10 minute walk from the main marina parking and the downtown waterfront.
If you are staying elsewhere on Baja California Sur, follow Highway 1 into Cabo San Lucas and park near the marina or in downtown; many tour operators also run combined boat trips to the Arch from the marina.
Tips for Visiting Arch of Cabo San Lucas #
- To see El Arco at its best and avoid the biggest crowds, take a small panga or water taxi from the Marina early in the morning when tour boats are fewer and the light is good for photos.
- Land's End features neighboring spots many visitors miss - ask your boat operator to stop at Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach) and nearby sea‑lion viewing areas rather than just passing the Arch on larger crowd tours.
- Depart from Cabo San Lucas Marina docks rather than trying to reach the rocks from the open coast; licensed local boat operators know safe approach angles and tides around the Arch.
