Árbæjarsafn
Museum Open-air folk museum in Reykjavík preserving traditional buildings
Reykjavík’s Árbæjarsafn open-air museum reconstructs historic Icelandic buildings and urban life; visitors stroll cobbled streets, tour farmhouses and learn about traditional crafts.
Árbæjarsafn is an open-air museum in Reykjavík, Iceland, established in 1957 as the city museum for local history. It preserves examples of domestic and commercial buildings relocated from Reykjavík as the city expanded.
The site presents a reconstructed village showing Reykjavík life from the 18th to the 20th centuries, with furnished homes, workshops and a farmstead. Exhibits include period interiors and outdoor displays that illustrate daily life, crafts and small-scale agriculture.
The museum was created by the City of Reykjavík and expanded over decades by moving buildings to the site for preservation. Its collection and layout evolved as a working open-air museum with seasonal programming and educational displays.
Located in the Árbær district on the eastern edge of Reykjavík, the museum sits within parkland that forms part of the city’s suburban green belt, roughly 5 km from the central city area.
- Best time to visit: Open-air displays are most complete in summer when period interiors are staffed and outdoor demonstrations run.
- Access: Situated about 5 km east of Reykjavík city centre and reachable by city bus or a short taxi ride.
