Arbel National Park and Nature Reserve

Arbel National Park and Nature Reserve sits on Mount Arbel in northern Israel and is known for its steep limestone cliffs overlooking the Sea of Galilee and the surrounding Galilee hills. The site combines dramatic natural scenery with archaeological remains.

Cliff-top lookouts provide panoramic views over the Sea of Galilee and the lower Galilee plains, and a network of marked trails leads to the cliff edge, caves and archaeological ruins. Hikers use both short ridge walks and more strenuous routes that descend to cliff caves and terraces.

The area preserves remains of ancient fortifications and rock-cut caves that were occupied or used in antiquity; those features have been studied and partially conserved. Over time the cliffs and caves have been used for defense, refuge and habitation at various historical periods.

The reserve lies on the western side of the Sea of Galilee in northern Israel, within the Galilee highlands, near local villages and a short distance from the lakeshore towns to the east.

• Trail conditions: Cliff-top trails include steep sections and short stairways; sturdy footwear is recommended for the uneven paths.
• Best viewing conditions: Several viewpoints offer wide panoramas of the Sea of Galilee and the lower Galilee plain, making clear days best for distant views.

• Arbel Cliff viewpoint: A high limestone escarpment that provides cliff-top lookouts with long views across the Sea of Galilee, the Galilee hills and surrounding valleys.
• Fortress remains and cliff caves: The ruins and carved caves at the cliff base and summit, containing remains of ancient fortifications and habitation cut into the rock and connected by a network of trails and stairways.
