Aralkum National Nature Park
National Park Protected desert park on former Aral Sea seabed
On the former Aral Sea bed in Karakalpakstan, the park documents environmental change; adventurous visitors come for stark desert landscapes, research sites and birding along remnant waterways.
Aralkum National Nature Park is a protected area in Karakalpakstan, Uzbekistan, located on land that was formerly part of the Aral Sea. The park covers parts of the newly exposed seabed created by the sea’s dramatic shrinkage.
The terrain is dominated by sandy and saline flats of the dried seabed, with visible abandoned vessels, salt crusts, and expanding desert habitats that document the environmental shift. The area now hosts pioneering plant communities and attracts birds and other wildlife adapting to the changed landscape.
The Aralkum formed after large-scale diversion of rivers that fed the Aral Sea during the Soviet period from the 1960s onward, a process that converted former seabed into desert and steppe.
The park lies in western Uzbekistan’s autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan on the former eastern basin of the Aral Sea.
- Ship graveyards: Several abandoned fishing and transport vessels remain stranded on the former seabed and are visible from nearby towns such as Moynaq.
