Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque Hydraulic System

The Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque Hydraulic System is a 16th-century water-supply ensemble in central Mexico created to transport spring water across a semi-arid plateau using canals, reservoirs and masonry aqueducts.

The system’s highlights include long gravity-fed canals and masonry structures culminating in an elevated arcade that bridges a valley; the ensemble demonstrates combined Iberian and indigenous hydraulic engineering in a rural landscape. Visitors typically see the aqueduct arcades and remaining reservoirs and canals that illustrate water management techniques of the colonial period.

The hydraulic system was constructed in the mid 1500s under the direction of Franciscan friar Francisco de Tembleque with indigenous and local labour; it was used to supply water to settlements and agricultural land and has been preserved as an example of early colonial hydraulic engineering.

The aqueduct and its associated works lie across parts of the central Mexican highlands in the State of Mexico and neighboring areas, linking springs and villages in a dispersed rural landscape.
