Aqua Marcia
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman aqueduct originally supplying Rome with water
One of ancient Rome’s aqueducts, the Aqua Marcia carried mountain water into the city; visitors encounter surviving arches and archaeological fragments on urban history walks.
Aqua Marcia is an ancient Roman aqueduct completed in the mid-2nd century BCE to supply Rome with fresh spring water. It is noted for the length and quality of the water it delivered to the city.
Remains include stretches of conduit and surviving arches visible at various points northeast of central Rome; the aqueduct is valued for its engineering scale rather than a single monumental ruin. Interpretive signs and scattered ruins can be seen along old Roman routes where the line of the aqueduct is traced.
Commissioned and completed in the 140s-130s BCE by Quintus Marcius or under his name, the Aqua Marcia was built to bring spring water from the Anio valley region into Rome. It was repaired and extended by later emperors and remained an important component of Rome’s water supply into the imperial period.
The aqueduct drew water from springs in the Anio (Aniene) valley northeast of Rome and ran into the city, with visible sections and archaeological traces along approaches to Rome.
- Length: One of Rome's longest ancient aqueducts, constructed to bring high-quality water from springs northeast of the city over a distance of about 91 kilometres.
Tips for Visiting Aqua Marcia #
- See surviving sections of the Aqua Marcia within Rome's Parco degli Acquedotti for the most dramatic, walkable stretches of Roman aqueduct masonry; plan morning or late-afternoon visits for better light and fewer recreational crowds.
- Walk a little beyond the main viewpoints in the park - further stretches of arches and quieter vantage points are often overlooked but give a clearer sense of the aqueduct's scale and layering with later structures.
Best Time to Visit Aqua Marcia #
Visit in spring or autumn for comfortable temperatures and easier outdoor exploration of the Roman aqueduct remains.
