Aqua Claudia
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman aqueduct near Rome
One of Rome’s major ancient aqueducts with surviving arches visible southeast of the city; visited by those studying imperial engineering and ancient infrastructure.
The Aqua Claudia is an ancient Roman aqueduct built in the 1st century AD and completed under Emperor Claudius, with an official inauguration in 52 AD. It was one of Rome’s principal imperial aqueducts, carrying water from distant sources into the city.
Significant sections of its elevated masonry arches survive and are visible outside the city, notably in the Parco degli Acquedotti and near the Porta Maggiore junction where several aqueducts entered Rome. Those surviving arches are characteristic examples of Roman engineering and remain a focal point for visitors studying Rome’s infrastructure.
The aqueduct was constructed in stages that began under Caligula’s reign and were finished under Claudius; it supplied baths, fountains and public works in imperial Rome and remained part of the urban water system for centuries thereafter.
Its remains lie on the outskirts of ancient Rome and are accessible from the Appian Way and adjacent historical parks.
