Aqua Alsietina
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman reservoir supplying water to Imperial Rome
Aqua Alsietina survives as traces of an ancient Roman aqueduct that once supplied water for Augustus’ artificial naval display; historians and walkers examine masonry remnants and route alignments west of Rome.
The Aqua Alsietina is an ancient Roman aqueduct that carried water to Rome from the Lacus Alsietinus. It was constructed in the reign of Emperor Augustus, around 2 BC, and is known for supplying non-potable water used for imperial naumachiae and irrigation.
Surviving elements are fragmentary and mainly visible as ruins and buried masonry rather than an intact aboveground channel. Modern traces of its route can be identified in the landscape northwest of Rome near the lake historically called Alsietinus.
Commissioned in the Augustan period, the aqueduct was built to bring water from the Alsietinus watershed into the city for artificial naval displays and other utilitarian uses rather than drinking. Over time its use declined and most of the structure fell into ruin, leaving only occasional visible remains and documentary references in Roman sources.
The aqueduct drew from the Lacus Alsietinus in the Lazio region northwest of central Rome. Its intake and early stretches lie in the low hills and plains outside the modern city.
