Aoshima, Miyazaki

Aoshima is a small island off the coast of Miyazaki City in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, noted for a seaside shrine and a well-preserved subtropical plant community. The island is a compact, easily visited coastal attraction.

A central attraction is the Aoshima Shrine, a small Shinto shrine set by the shore; the island also features a dense stand of subtropical evergreen vegetation that contrasts with the surrounding coastline. Exposed rocky ridges known as the Devil’s Washboard encircle parts of the island and are a distinctive geological feature.
