Late-season weather volatility means operators sometimes shift routes toward the Shetlands or inner bays for calmer conditions.

Weddell Sea & Northeast Peninsula (Ice-shelf and Pack-ice country)

March sees the onset of freeze-up again, and operators that venture into the Weddell typically head north before the edge refreezes. The sea-ice freeze can be swift; being on-site at the right time rewards visitors with ephemeral ice formations and rarely seen ice-shelf vistas. Prepare for stiff winds and quick schedule changes; success in this region often comes down to timing and luck.

Ross Sea & McMurdo Sound (Ross Ice Shelf, Mount Erebus)

April through September returns as full Antarctic winter for the Ross Sea region with long darkness, extreme temperatures and consolidated ice across the bay making any visiting impossible for typical tourism. Winter-over personnel maintain stations, and outside visitors are generally not accepted. If your interest is scientific or professional, arrange access years in advance and be ready for isolated, survival-level conditions.

East Antarctica & Dronning Maud Land (Coastal ice cliffs and research stations)

April through September brings the deep Antarctic winter with continuous darkness and extremely low temperatures across East Antarctica, including Dronning Maud Land - travel is not feasible for tourists. Only essential scientific wintering crews remain, and getting to or from stations is heavily controlled and seasonal. If your interest is academic or operational, expect rigorous selection and training schedules long before arrival.

Antarctic Plateau & South Pole (Interior high ice plateau)

March again tightens the window for visitors as daylight shortens and temperatures begin to drop; aircraft departure windows narrow and field teams wrap up. For those still on the plateau the focus shifts to equipment retrieval and departure logistics, not leisure. Travelers should be ready for abrupt schedule changes and have contingency plans for delayed evacuation.
