Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House is a museum in Amsterdam displaying the canal house where Anne Frank and her family hid from Nazi persecution between 1942 and 1944. The museum preserves the Secret Annex and documents Anne Frank’s life and the wider context of the Holocaust.

The principal focus is the Secret Annex rooms with original and reconstructed elements, plus exhibitions in the front house that explain the family’s story and the history of the diary. The site is a place of remembrance and education about persecution and human rights.

Anne Frank and the others in hiding were discovered in August 1944; after the war the building was preserved and opened as a museum in 1960 following fundraising and public interest in Anne Frank’s diary. The museum has since expanded its exhibition and educational programmes.

The house stands on the Prinsengracht canal near the Westerkerk in central Amsterdam and is within walking distance of other central sites; due to limited capacity most visitors require pre-booked timed tickets.
