Near Kars, the ruined city of Ani attracts history-minded travelers for its ruined walls, dozen-plus medieval churches and panoramic views across the Armenian highlands where trade routes once crossed.
Ani is the ruined medieval city in eastern Turkey that served as a capital of medieval Armenia and a major regional centre in the 10th and 11th centuries. It preserves extensive stone churches, a cathedral and defensive walls on a high ridge.
The site offers large stone ruins including a prominent cathedral completed in the late 10th century, fragments of city walls and numerous smaller churches and domestic structures. The ruined buildings provide panoramic views over the Arpaçay/Aras river valley and the borderlands.
Ani developed as the capital of the Bagratid Armenian kingdom in the 10th century, achieving great wealth and architectural activity in the 10th and early 11th centuries. The city suffered conquest, earthquakes and decline in later centuries and was gradually abandoned, leaving the stone structures preserved as ruins.
