Angelokastro (Corfu)

Angelokastro is a medieval hilltop fortress on the north-west coast of Corfu, built on a steep rocky crest and overlooking the Ionian Sea and surrounding coastline. It is particularly noted for its dramatic coastal position and panoramic views.

The surviving remains include defensive walls and terraces set directly on the rock, and the site affords wide views along the coast for several kilometres, making it both an archaeological ruin and a natural lookout. The footprint of the fortress is compact but perched at a high vantage point above the sea.

The castle dates to the medieval period and was used as a defensive stronghold during successive Venetian and Byzantine eras; it played a role in local coastal defence and control of surrounding settlements. Over centuries the fortification fell out of military use and now survives as ruins open to visitors.

Angelokastro sits on Corfu’s north-western shore, near Paleokastritsa, overlooking the Ionian Sea and positioned above steep coastal terrain. It is several kilometres from Corfu town and is accessed from local roads and short hiking paths.

• Access note: Reachable by a steep footpath from the nearby villages, the site requires a short uphill walk and offers expansive sea views from the peak. Carry water and sturdy shoes for the climb.
