Angel, London

Angel is a district in the London Borough of Islington, named for a historic coaching inn on Islington High Street and centred on a major local transport node and commercial thoroughfare.

The area is known for shopping, restaurants, pubs and theatres along Upper Street and nearby lanes, attracting local and visitor foot traffic. The Regent’s Canal is a short walk away and offers waterside paths and narrowboat moorings.

A notable transport feature is Angel tube station on the Northern line, which provides quick links into the West End and City of London and has one of the Underground’s notably long escalators. The neighbourhood is a compact, mixed-use urban area with offices, leisure and residential streets.

The district name derives from an inn called the Angel that stood on the major north-south coaching route into the City of London; the area grew in the 18th and 19th centuries as suburban development reached this part of north London.

Located in inner north London, immediately north of the City of London and within easy walking or Tube distance of central London destinations, the area sits on the A1 corridor through Islington.
