Andørja (island)

Andøya is an island in northern Norway, part of the Vesterålen archipelago and administered from Andøy municipality in what is now Troms og Finnmark county. It lies above the Arctic Circle and is characterized by a long, low profile with coastal plains and exposed Atlantic-facing cliffs.

The island is known for birdlife and whale-watching activities off its northern coast, and it hosts the Andøya Space Center, a facility for atmospheric and space-related research and sounding-rocket launches. Coastal communities on the island support fisheries, tourism and scientific activity.

Settlement on Andøya is concentrated in a few villages, with transport links by road and seasonal ferry services connecting to neighbouring islands and the mainland. The island’s northern latitude and marine climate shape local ecosystems and visitor activities.
