Andreanof Islands at a Glance
About Andreanof Islands
The Andreanof Islands are a subgroup of the Aleutian Islands in western Alaska, consisting of a string of volcanic islands including Adak and Atka. The chain is remote, geologically active and characterised by steep coasts, tundra and volcanic peaks.
The islands are sparsely populated overall; Adak formerly supported a large U.S. naval and air facility and now has a small civilian community, while Atka continues as a site of indigenous Aleut settlement. The area is notable for seabird colonies, marine mammals and productive fisheries.
The islands were strategically important in 20th-century military history and have since seen reduced permanent military presence; contemporary uses include small-scale local communities, commercial fishing and limited scientific activity. Many islands remain largely undeveloped and accessible only by boat or infrequent air links.
Geographically the Andreanof Islands lie in the central Aleutians, west of mainland Alaska, forming part of the Pacific rim between the Alaskan mainland and the westernmost Aleutian groups.
- Access and weather: Part of the central Aleutian chain, the islands are volcanic, remote and exposed to severe maritime weather; access is by limited air or sea services.
- Wildlife and fisheries: Important habitat for seabirds, marine mammals and cold-water fisheries; many islands are lightly populated or uninhabited.
