Museum Ancient Greek-Roman theater with Mount Etna and sea views
Taormina’s ancient Greek theatre sits on a cliff above the Ionian Sea with views of Mount Etna. Visitors tour the stone auditorium, attend summer performances and photograph the coastal panorama.
The Ancient Theatre of Taormina is a Greco-Roman theatre in Taormina, Sicily, originally constructed in the Hellenistic period and later rebuilt and enlarged in Roman times. It sits on a hillside with commanding views of the coastline and Mount Etna.
Visitors can walk the surviving seating tiers and the orchestra area and view the raised stage remains; the location offers panoramic vistas of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna that contribute to its popularity. The theatre is also used periodically for concerts and performances, continuing its long tradition as a venue for staged events.
The visible fabric shows Greek-era masonry and later Roman alterations, providing insight into classical theatre architecture and local adaptations in Sicily.
Originally laid out in the Hellenistic period, the theatre was modified and enlarged during Roman rule to accommodate different performance practices and larger audiences. Its long history of use and reuse is evident in the layered construction and repairs.
The theatre is located within the hilltop town of Taormina in eastern Sicily, perched above the Ionian coastline with direct views toward Mount Etna.
- Historical phases: The theatre contains visible construction phases from Greek origins and Roman rebuilding, making it a key site for studying classical-to-Roman theatre adaptation in Sicily.
What to See #
- Cavea and orchestra: The cavea (seating tiers) and orchestra area form the main visitor-accessible ruins and give a clear sense of the theatre's scale and original layout.
- Stage and stage buildings: A raised stage area and flanking masonry walls survive in part, and the site is used today for performances and cultural events as well as tourism.
