Main image

The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus is a large classical Greek theatre in the sanctuary complex of Asclepius in the Argolid region of the Peloponnese, Greece, noted for its proportion and acoustics. It dates to the 4th century BCE and is among the best-preserved examples of Greek theatre architecture.

Architectural highlights include the almost complete semicircular auditorium with many tiers of stone seating and a well-preserved stage area that together originally accommodated roughly 13,000 to 14,000 spectators. The theatre is still used annually for theatrical performances, most notably in the Athens and Epidaurus Festival.

The theatre was constructed in the classical period, usually attributed to architects of the late 4th century BCE, as part of the sanctuary complex dedicated to the healing god Asclepius. It received Roman-period modifications but retains its classical layout and seating geometry.

Located near the site of ancient Epidaurus on the eastern Peloponnese coast, the theatre sits within the archaeological park that includes temples and other civic structures associated with the sanctuary.

  • Acoustics and modern use: Renowned for its exceptional acoustics, a whisper at stage level can be heard by spectators in the highest rows; the theatre remains in active use during summer for performances.
