Archaeological Site Ancient Macedonian sanctuary at Mount Olympus' foothills
At the foot of Mount Olympus, ancient Dion offers archaeological ruins, a museum of finds and mosaic floors; visitors combine walks among temples with hikes into Olympus National Park.
Ancient Dion is an archaeological site and former city at the foot of Mount Olympus in Central Macedonia, historically important as a religious center for ancient Macedonia. The site contains temples, a theatre, baths and extensive archaeological remains from the classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods.
Highlights within the site include the sanctuary complexes dedicated to Zeus and other deities, a Roman-period theatre, bath complexes and mosaic-covered houses; many of these features are exposed in the open-air archaeological park. A nearby museum displays sculptures, inscriptions and finds recovered during excavations.
Dion developed from the archaic and classical periods into a major Macedonian sanctuary used by Macedonian kings; historical sources record its use by figures such as Philip II and Alexander the Great as a place of worship before military campaigns. Excavations in the 20th and 21st centuries have uncovered large sections of the city and sanctuaries and supported ongoing research and conservation.
The site lies at the northern base of Mount Olympus near the modern village of Dion, in Central Macedonia, roughly 15-20 kilometres from the city of Katerini and within driving distance of the region’s main roads.
- Macedonian cult center: The site is situated at the foothills of Mount Olympus and was the principal Macedonian cult center where kings performed sacrifices before military campaigns.
- Open archaeological park and museum: Excavated areas and a small museum are open to visitors, making the site suitable for combined archaeological and mountain-orientation visits in spring and autumn.
