Ancient City of Damascus
Historical Site Historic Old City with continuous urban habitation
One of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, Damascus offers the Umayyad Mosque, winding souks, Ottoman‑era houses and Levantine cuisine - features that have drawn visitors for centuries.
Ancient City of Damascus is the historic core of Syria’s capital, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 and recognised as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The Old City contains layers of Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman urban fabric.
Key features include monumental religious buildings, a retained Roman street plan with the Straight Street (Via Recta), dense urban quarters, traditional markets and defensive structures. Visitors can see a succession of building phases and many historic monuments clustered within the compact Old City.
Damascus grew over millennia and the Old City preserves evidence of successive cultural and political eras, including the Umayyad period when the present form of the Grand Mosque was established on earlier sacred sites. The city’s urban form has been reshaped repeatedly while retaining core historic elements.
The Ancient City lies at the heart of modern Damascus in southwestern Syria, situated along the corrective course of the Barada River and at the edge of the surrounding desert and mountain ranges.
- Continuously inhabited: One of the world's oldest continuously inhabited urban centres, with layers of Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman remains visible in the Old City.
- Umayyad Mosque focal point: The Umayyad Mosque occupies a key location in the Old City and is a focal point for both architecture and communal life.

- Citadel and souqs: The Citadel and surrounding defensive works, along with market areas such as the Al-Hamidiyah Souq that retain traditional urban functions.

Tips for Visiting Ancient City of Damascus #
- Before planning any travel, check current international travel advisories and local access restrictions for Damascus: security and access to parts of the Old City can change rapidly, and some areas remain closed to visitors.
- If permitted to visit, arrange entry and exploration with an experienced local guide or recognised tour operator who can navigate local checkpoints, obtain permissions where required, and explain which quarters and monuments are currently accessible safely.
- Start your walking circuit at one of the historic gates (for example the well-known eastern gates) to follow a clear route through the souks and major monuments; doing so helps you avoid getting turned around in the dense medieval street pattern.
- Be prepared that many smaller historic houses, museums and religious sites may have limited public opening hours or access restrictions; ask locally about scheduled times for mosque visits and for heritage house openings rather than assuming they are always open.
