Anastasian Wall
Archaeological Site Byzantine defensive wall across the Thracian peninsula
Built under Emperor Anastasius I, the Anastasian Wall runs west of old Constantinople and survives in fragments around Istanbul; history walks and ruined ramparts attract students of Byzantine defence.
The Anastasian Wall is a late Roman-Byzantine defensive line built to protect Constantinople’s land approaches. Constructed under Emperor Anastasius I in the early 6th century, it stretched across the Thracian peninsula as an outer belt of fortification separate from the city’s sea walls.
The wall comprised continuous masonry ramparts with towers and gates, designed to block hostile armies from reaching the capital without first overcoming this outer barrier. It served as a strategic frontier defense that supplemented the city’s inner fortifications.
Raised by the Byzantine administration under Anastasius I (reign 491-518), the wall was a major construction project of the period and was maintained, repaired and adapted in later centuries as military needs changed. Over time sections fell into ruin or were quarried for building material, while other stretches were incorporated into later fortifications.
Geographically the line ran across the European side of what is now Turkey, connecting the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea along the Thracian peninsula outside historic Constantinople/Istanbul.
- Remains today: Traces of the wall and several tower foundations can still be seen across the Thracian peninsula; some sections survive as low earthworks or reused masonry in later structures.
How to Get to Anastasian Wall #
Surviving sections are scattered west and northwest of Istanbul; one accessible fragment is near the village of Büyükçekmece, reached by coastal road D100/E5 and local buses from central Istanbul (approx. 40-60 minutes depending on traffic). Local guides in the suburbs can point to easier access points.
Tips for Visiting Anastasian Wall #
- Bring water and wear sturdy shoes; sections of the wall are remote and the terrain can be rough.
- Combine exploration with a trip to the Yedikule Fortress and the Sea Walls for contrasting views.
- Hire a local guide in the suburbs where fragments are accessible; they can point out later Byzantine repairwork and Ottoman reuse.
Best Time to Visit Anastasian Wall #
Best explored in spring or autumn when Istanbul's heat eases; many stretches are outdoors and exposed.
